Moving up from the Billable Hour

· Management,Alternative fees,Billing

The billable hour. The bane of every lawyer’s existence. The dread of every law firm client. Yet, the majority of law firms are still slaves to this business model.

But times, they are a changing.

John Chisholm (of John Chisholm Consulting) believes that this Old Law business model which leverages people x time x hourly rate is well past its use by date and that if we want to be sustainably successful and relevant as a profession in the future, law firms should move to pricing their services according to the value they deliver to their clients - not time spent.

But what does that actually look like? Has anyone been there? Does it work?

John has been working with law firms and their clients since 2005, assisting with mindset change and the practical implementation of value based pricing - to become “Firms of the Future”. He’s a recovering third generation lawyer, previously a partner, managing partner and chief executive of two major Australian law firms. In his spare time (seeing as he’s not beholden to hourly billing), John runs an advisory practice, is a professional commentator and mentor and speaks, writes, educates, facilitates, coaches and consults in Australasia, the US and the UK.

A long-term member of the Australasian Legal Practice Management Association and the Law Council of Australia, John’s also a Senior Fellow of the VeraSage Institute - an international think tank of thought leaders and innovators for professional firms – and he’s penned numerous articles on value based pricing and has presented to thousands of professionals on the topic.

He knows what’s what and on Wednesday 29 March, John will explain why and how more and more firms are making this change and how it benefits our clients, our team, ourselves and our profession.
